What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle energy therapy.  Reiki is a holistic-healing technique which has been used by various people throughout centuries.  Through the gentle laying-on of hands, a Reiki practitioner is able to transmit the positive Reiki energy to a person, a plant, a pet and many others.

The term Reiki comes from two Japanese words.  The first word, Rei is difficult to translate into English.  In its simplest form, Rei means "universal", but that is, unfortunately, only half of the meaning.  The word Rei also has a spiritual nature.  The top of the Kanji (Japanese calligraphy) for Rei is similar to the Kanji for rain.  Rain falls from the heavens and nourishes all it falls upon, regardless of race, status, religion, etc.  This idea is the embodiment of the word Rei.  While it comes from the heavens, it is never limited to any type of person, and is able to nourish and help all who are willing to let it reach them.  Ki is simply "life-force energy".  It is the force in our body which makes our cells perpetually live and replace themselves.  It is the part of our body that makes us heal when we are cut, bruised, sprained, sick, etc.

So, when the two words are put together, Reiki simply means a universally-spiritual energy which nourishes and assists the life energy of all living things.

Reiki as a practice is using this energy and applying it to people, plants, animals, etc. for their greatest good.
